view larger Inner Sanctum - Last year, late in the afternoon on a balmy October day, I attended a wedding at Hacienda del Sol and had my camera in tow. I was looking for scenic shots as soon as we arrived. Before passing through the Hacienda's main gate, I noticed a beautiful vignette when I looked to the left - cactus, flowers, a Tucson-blue door, niches with carved figures and long afternoon shadows dancing on the patio wall. This was my kind of painting! After the wedding, I couldn't wait to get home and paint this charming and intimate scene.

view larger White Stallion Ranch - Forty-seven years ago, Cynthia and Allen True purchased a 17-room guest ranch on 200 acres in Marana. The True family continued to acquire the land around them as neighboring ranchers moved on, and they have now amassed 3,000 acres. They have also added 24 more casitas. I am so thankful they have preserved this beautiful desert oasis just half an hour outside of Tucson.

view larger Casita at White Stallion Ranch - I looked at this scene every morning just outside my casita during my week-long stay at the White Stallion Ranch. I was very happy painting in Casita #24. When I needed a break, I would ride out into the desert on horseback and when I returned, I felt recharged and eager to paint again. Truly a slice of heaven at the Ranch.

view larger The Breakfast Club - It's 105 degrees in Tucson, but in Wall, South Dakota I wear a windbreaker and shudder as the cold wind blows the moody gray clouds across the plains. Fifty artists line up on the chilly banks of the Cheyenne River to witness the 1800's come to life again. We are here for the Artist Ride - an invitational event that provides historic photographic reference material for western artists.
Cowboys and Indians battle behind us and a stage coach charges through the chaos on the grassy patch along the river bank. On this morning, I am most interested in the horses roaming through the high grass on the other side of the ranch. The majestic animals march through the fields grabbing stalks of grass as they go - breakfast on the run. These three horses stick closely together throughout the entire morning, bonded in a way only they comprehend.

view larger Aunt Joan's Porch - Aunt Joan's Porch - After a family wedding in Vermont last August, we drove down the coast of Maine and ended the trip in Rockport, MS where we saw lots of cute shops on the busy pier, art galleries, and brilliant flowers everywhere. Driving through the side streets, we came upon this picturesque scene that I wanted to paint as soon as I saw it. Aunt Joan's Porch is named in honor of our dear friend, Joan West, who dog sits for Tango and Stella, and is an avid gardener.

This scene is the romantic Southwest Christmas image I'd been searching for. Thank you, Jim, for sharing your beautiful home!

view larger Little King Abuto - The Reid Park Zoo invited me to photograph the three baby lions born there in September. On the first morning in their sunlit, African habitat, they frolicked and played like kittens. When I traveled to Africa in 2008, my only disappointment was not seeing lion cubs, so watching these three babies was a thrill.
Little King Abuto stood right in front of me and posed as if to say "Paint Me! Paint Me!"

view larger Out by the Lighthouse - On the drive down Highway 1 along the California coast, my husband was determined to visit a lighthouse. Alas, we found one overlooking the foggy sea at Pigeon Point. Sadly, it was closed. We explored the Point and came across an abandoned house - probably where the caretakers of the old lighthouse had resided. I was captivated by the textures and colors of the peeling paint on the exterior walls and imagined what life was like on Pigeon Point in days gone by.

view larger Marine Layer - On our New Year's trip to California, we drove the scenic route from the airport to the hotel--up to Half Moon Bay then down Highway 1 along the coast to Monterey. We stopped at the pier in Santa Cruz and ate fish & chips at a joint on the boardwalk. On the way back to the car, we noticed the buildings and palm trees were bathed in an unusual golden light. The mixture of moist cool air from the seas colliding with hot inland breezes created the "Marine Layer" - a foggy pale yellow mist that draped the entire landscape. I wanted to express the mood and serenity I felt when looking at this ordinary scene now transformed into something magical. Controlling the paint and water to achieve this atmospheric effect proved to the challenging, but ultimately very rewarding.

view larger View From Clint's Place - During our trip to Monterey and Carmel, we met up with a couple from Tucson who were also in California for the holidays. We ate lunch at the Cottage in downtown Carmel and then wandered through the shops and galleries. Later in the afternoon, we headed for the Carmel Mission Inn owned by Clint Eastwood. We sat outside on the deck and drank margaritas and watched the sinking sun paint the hills and water in reds and pinks and ultramarine blue. I wanted to capture the magnificent array of color and the silhouette of the cypress trees against the last burst of yellow light.

view larger Pat II - This is the second in a series called Pat's Flowers. Painted mostly with a palette knife, I wanted a fun, free acrylic interpretation of this still life originally done as a watercolor. Usually, while I'm working on painting, its name becomes apparent to me, but when I'd painted Pat's Flowers for the first time I was at a loss for a name. Pat, my gallery director at the time, piped up and said with her usual bravado, "Well then, you might as well call it Pat's Flowers." Pat Kulla has since moved to Maine to open a bed and breakfast on the coast, but will be thrilled to know there is now a second painting named in her honor.
