Annual Show & Fall Gala Preview

Arizona Treasures

An art professor once told me: Paint what you know, and paint what you love. Then your passion for the subject will come through in the work. That has been my goal in creating this body of work titled “Arizona Treasures.”

From animals to architecture to desert scenes, I love them all. I have lived here for more than 40 years and can be inspired simply by seeing interesting shadows cast on a rock or mountain.  Here’s an excerpt I wrote in my coffee table book that sums it up:

Years ago, I came to Arizona seeking a new start. I could not have imagined the events that would unfold during the next 37 years. Tucson was nothing more than sand and cactus, they’d told me back home. But they didn’t know the mountains turned purple at sunset, the prickly pear bloom red and yellow in the spring, and the brilliant brittle bush grows wild in the wash. They’d never seen a bobcat walk across the front porch, 10 baby quail scurry across the road, or a hawk glide on a downdraft with the grace of God in this magnificent desert - my home.

I hope you enjoy the show as much as I enjoyed creating it for you.

Southwest Art | Tubac Gate

Tubac Gate
Original Acrylic

This amazing gate/garden scene is located just north of the Tubac Golf Resort. The overgrown vegetation that covers the Mexican-style hacienda created a romantic and picturesque subject to paint.

Southwest Art | Hummingbird & the Hibiscus

Hummingbird and the Hibiscus

Southwest Art | Baboquivari

Baboquivari
Original Acrylic

I saw this view of the Baboquivari Mountains when I stayed at Rancho de la Osa in Sasabe, Arizona. The light and shadows cast by the craggy mountains created a very interesting subject.

Image Size: 18 x 24"   |   Framed Size: 25 x 32"   |   Price: $3,250

Southwest Art | Courtyard Splendor

Courtyard Splendor
Original Watercolor/Pastel

We went to happy hour at Hacienda del Sol to enjoy their new patio, but instead I spent most of the late afternoon taking photos of the many picturesque scenes on the grounds. Though not an exact replication of the inner courtyard at the Hacienda, the painting incorporates many of the elements I saw there.

Image Size: 9 x 12"   |   Framed Size: 19 x 22"   |   Price: $1,250

Southwest Art | Sandpiper

Sandpiper
Original Watercolor/Pastel

This is the one painting that does not fit the “Arizona Treasures” theme of the show, but I was compelled to paint this beautiful sand piper when I saw him delicately making his way along the shores of Del Mar.

Image Size: 9 x 12"   |   Framed Size: 19 x 22"   |   Price: $1,250

Southwest Art | Russell's Gate

Southwest Art | Thimble Peak

Thimble Peak
Original Acrylic

This is one of the iconic Tucson mountain scenes I hadn’t painted before. After several requests from my staff, I finally painted Thimble Peak after taking some good reference photos while driving on the east side of Tucson in the late afternoon. The shadows make the scene especially interesting.

Image Size: 24 x 36"   |   Framed Size: 30 x 42"   |   Price: $5,500

Southwest Art | Arizona Bill

Arizona Bill
Original Acrylic

This seasoned cowboy cooked a chuck wagon breakfast for me three times a week when I stayed at Tombstone Monument Ranch. He made scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, and coffee in a tin cup while sharing folklore of the historic town of Tombstone. I spent ten days at the ranch in August – a wonderful getaway where I could paint in peace and quiet, and prepare for this show.

Image Size: 9 x 12"   |   Framed Size: 14.5 x 18"   |   Price: $1,250

Southwest Art | Floating

Floating

This abstract painting celebrates the lily pads that grow on the pond of the golf course in Tubac, Arizona.

Southwest Art | Brenda's Still Life

Brenda's Still Life

Friend and artist Brenda Semanick came to my studio to paint with me. We created this still life and both painted the same scene. I enjoyed the company in what is usually a very solitary endeavor.

Image Size: 11 x 14"   |   Framed Size: 18 x 20"   |   Price: $1,250

Southwest Art | Pink Adobe

Pink Adobe

When I met with a couple at their Sabino Canyon home about a commissioned painting, I fell in love with their entry way. The large trees cast interesting shadows on all the cacti and plants beneath them.

Image Size: 12 x 16"   |   Framed Size: 18 x 20"   |   Price: $2,450

Southwest Art | Santa Elena

Santa Elena

This beautiful church is located in the remote town of Sasabe, Arizona. With a population of 11, the town sits right on the Mexican border about 80 miles west of Nogales.

Image Size: 16 x 20"   |   Framed Size: 22 x 24"   |   Price: $1,750

Southwest Art | Hideaway

Hideaway
Original Acrylic

This whimsical painting was inspired by a small adobe home in the desert surrounded by lush vegetation.

Image Size: 18 x 24"   |   Framed Size: 26 x 32"   |   Price: $2,400

Southwest Art | Nuggets in the Desert

Nuggets in the Desert
Original Acrylic

I started this painting by using large brush strokes and laying in big patches of color. I knew I wanted to paint a desert scene, but beyond that, I let the painting take me where it would. I refined and added as I went along. The strokes that looked like a saguaro were leaning and I liked the fun idea of the cactus not standing straight. I added stamping for texture and interest, and the lines and nuggets were added at the end. I like the fanciful and colorful nature of this painting.

Image Size: 30 x 40"   |   Framed Size: 43 x 51"   |   Price: $6,500

Southwest Art | Lean on Me

Lean on Me
Original Watercolor/Pastel

I saw these old boots at the Tombstone Monument Ranch and liked the way one pair leaned against the other for support.

Image Size: 9 x 12"   |   Framed Size: 19 x 22"   |   Price: $1,250

Southwest Art | Blue Quail

Blue Quail
Original Acrylic

This beautiful quail was perched on a branch across the wash from our backyard as we enjoyed morning tea and coffee on the porch.

Image Size: 12 x 16"   |   Framed Size: 21 x 28"   |   Price: $1,450

Southwest Art | River in the Canyon

River in the Canyon
Original Acrylic

I enjoyed painting a recent commission of the Grand Canyon so much that I wanted to paint it again from a different viewpoint. I love the shapes created by the nooks and crannies. Contrast that with the powerful Colorado River running through it, and the drama is created.

Image Size: 24 x 48"   |   Framed Size: 31 x 55"   |   Price: $6,500

Southwest Art | Mule Deer

Mule Deer
Original Acrylic

Thanks to photographer Thomas Wiewandt for the photo reference I used for this painting of two mule deer drinking at the pond that he created near his house. The pond attracts wildlife so he can photograph them in their natural habitat.

Image Size: 9 x 12"   |   Framed Size: 14.5 x 18"   |   Price: $1,250

Southwest Art | Jaguar

Jaguar
Original Watercolor/Pastel

Jaguars still roam the southeastern quadrant of Arizona and occasionally are captured on the night cameras set up by wildlife observers. It is estimated that only one or two of these Arizona treasures still reside here.

Image Size: 9 x 12"   |   Framed Size: 19 x 22"   |   Price: $1,250

Southwest Art | Rancho de la Osa

Rancho de la Osa
Original Watercolor/Pastel

This building, constructed in the 1800s, served as the main house for a multi-thousand- acre ranch in Sasabe, Arizona. Now part of Rancho de la Osa Guest Ranch, the building is a gathering place for guests. The 20’ long table in the dining room was made from a huge pine tree on Mt. Lemmon, and guests are treated to amazing cuisine at every meal.

Image Size: 9 x 12"   |   Framed Size: 19 x 22"   |   Price: $1,250

Southwest Art | The Beer Guy

The Beer Guy
Original Acrylic

I took a photo of my husband Miro and liked the silhouette of the cowboy standing in the barn with the illuminated beer bottle in his hand.

Image Size: 12 x 16"   |   Framed Size: 18 x 22"   |   Price: $1,450

Southwest Art | Lisa's Wildcat

Lisa's Wildcat
Original Acrylic

This handsome wildcat resides at the Tucson Wildlife Center, which was founded by Lisa Bates and her husband Peter Lininger. The painting is dedicated to Lisa as thanks for devoting her life to saving thousands of animals during the past 20 years.

Image Size: 12 x 16"   |   Framed Size: 16 x 22"   |   Price: $2,500

Southwest Art | Bright Blue Cacti

Bright Blue Cacti
Original Acrylic

I photographed these cacti and used the photo as a starting point for inspiration. I then set aside the photo and let the painting take me where it would. The light blue sky became bluer as the painting progressed, and the background now is as integral to the painting as the subject matter itself.

Image Size: 9 x 12"   |   Framed Size: 15 x 18"   |   Price: $1,250

Southwest Art | Spiky

Spiky
Original Acrylic

This painting was inspired by the play of light and shadow on a cactus patch in the Tucson Mountains. I love the combinations of green, purple, and pink cacti that occur in nature.

Image Size: 11 x 14"   |   Framed Size: 18 x 20"   |   Price: $1,450

Below are three commissioned paintings Diana created in 2017 that are now available in reproduction.

Southwest Art | Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks I & II
Available only in reproduction | Print & canvas options here

This concept started with a photo of some prickly pear cactus in bloom. I “painted” the photo on my computer using a painting app and liked it so much that I decided to do a full scale painting. I named it Twin Peaks because I was listening to “Twin Peaks” on the TV while painting, then added the second peak as I finished the painting!

Image Size: 30 x 40" (per panel)   |   Framed Size: n/a   |   Price: Original Sold!

Southwest Art | Trip Down the Grand Canyon

Trip Down the Grand Canyon
Available only in reproduction | Print & canvas options here

This was a painting commissioned by a gallery customer who graciously allowed the Gallery to reproduce it in canvas and print. He wanted a remembrance of his recent raft trip down the Colorado.

Image Size: 18 x 24"   |   Framed Size: n/a   |   Price: Original sold!

Southwest Art | Backyard Bloom

Backyard Bloom I, II & III
Available only in reproduction | Canvas options here

This was a painting commissioned by a couple who graciously allowed the Gallery to reproduce it in canvas and print. It celebrates spring in the desert and the mountain scene they see from their backyard.
