This is the iconic building on the mall at the University of Arizona. Built in 1891, it is an important part of Tucson's history. Old Main, formerly a classroom setting, is now primarily used for University offices. Constructed in 1891, Old Main was the original University Building. Designed in a style often referred to as 'territorial hybrid', the building was sunken six feet below the surface so the ground would help minimize the effects of the warm Tucson summers. The patio and porch areas are a popular gathering place to enjoy lunch and watch mall activities.
