Both Lee (1929-2015) and Mary (1933-1995) Weebothee were accomplished Zuni artisans on their own, but they were especially well known for their collaborative pieces, like this one. Lee spied Mary Ann on his last day of high school and they married a couple of years later. Lee was taught how to make jewelry by his parents. His mother and he taught Mary how to make jewelry early in their marriage. Over the years, they both became multiple award winners at various Native American festivals and craft fairs. When they created collaborative pieces, Mary would typically do the lapidary; Lee, the silverwork. Their work dates from the late 1940s through their respective passings.
Early in his career, Lee worked for Robert Wallace, the brother of famous trader C.G. Wallace. After Lee and Mary were married, they both worked for Joe Tanner, a Gallup, NM-based trader.
This stunning and iconic Weebothee double-sided pendant on a handmade chain was made in the 1960s. It is double sided, with Morenci turquoise cabochons on both sides.
